The Peacock throne was a famous jewelled throne that was the seat of the Mughal emperors of India. Commissioned in the early 17th century by Shah Jahan it was located in the private halls of residence in the Red Fort of Delhi.
The original throne was subsequently captured and taken as a war trophy in 1739 by the Persian emperor Nadir Shah, and has been lost ever since. A replacement throne was commissioned afterwards and existed until the Indian Rebellion of 1857.
Wrought out of 1150kg of gold and 230kg of precious stones, conservatively the throne would now be worth around $800 million… Wow!!!
The thrones available for hire from Phoenix Special Occassion Hire in Gloucester might not be worth millions of pounds, but they sure are beautiful and promise to make anyone sitting on them feel like royalty.
